Dreaming Away the Gray

About this time of year (actually, it starts in January and gets desperate in April), I dream of travelling to a warm, sunny, exotic place to find an adventure. Today, a picnic in Italy burned bright in my mind. It goes this way: I wake to a breeze flowing through the gauzy vintage curtains in my beautiful villa bedroom. The frame that holds wavy glass of the oversized antique windows creaks slightly as the cool air wraps itself around to enter the room. The view from each of the 4 like an impressionist painting through my sleepy eyes. No groaning to have to get out of bed today! After a fabulous breakfast of amazingly fresh fruit, cream and baguettes (See? This is a dream! Normally, that breakfast would kill me, being Celiac!) it's time to meet with my friends for a leisurely bike ride through the glorious Italian countryside. The warmth of the golden sun, the sweet fragrance from the fields of roadside blooms only add to the joy of being with my sweetheart, Jeff, my delightful daughter, Niki and my cherished besties, Lacey, Noreen and DeeAnn. A memory that will never be forgotten. As the sun positions itself high noon we take rest under a magnificent oak by a stream (What stories does it hold in its many years of living?). Another forbidden meal of all that is good (and poisonous to me in reality) is consumed heartily with laughter and bubbling water as musical accompaniment. Invigorated from our respite, we continue on our journey, passing breathtaking scenery and the occasional ancient castle. One thing we refuse to pass is the vineyard that calls to our hearts. Down the path we go! A treat of Barberesco and Super Tuscan await us! (How fast can you peddle?) Imbibing enough to bring joy, we decide that it is time to head back to town before dusk. The ride to the village is filled with that Sunday afternoon kind of feeling, sweet nostalgia from our adventure, yet sadness for its end. Nothing that a bottle of fabulous champagne and a long dinner can't cure!
